Head of College

The faculty head of each of Princeton’s seven residential colleges is a tenured faculty member responsible for creating an inclusive community that nurtures the intellectual, social, and personal development of its undergraduate student members. The Faculty Heads of College reside in college houses, which allow them to host programs that build community by bringing together students, faculty, and staff.

The position’s core responsibilities include to:

  • Lead and support a professional staff of six: the residential college dean; the assistant dean for studies; the assistant dean for student life; the live-in residential life coordinator; the college program administrator; and the college office coordinator;

  • Provide vision, leadership, and support for the intellectual and social programs sponsored by the college, including the faculty fellows program, the resident graduate student program, the residential college adviser program, and the college council;

  • Create and sustain an inclusive community for the undergraduate residents and affiliates of the college; get to know students well and support their intellectual and personal development;

  • Be present in the college consistently during the academic year (from orientation through commencement);

  • Steward college resources, including program budget and facilities;

  • Attend regular meetings of the Council of College Heads (COCH), the policy council for the residential college program with leaders from the Offices of the Dean of the College and the Dean of Undergraduate Students, as well as the Offices of the VP for Campus Life and for University Services;

  • Encourage faculty engagement in college life;

  • Think strategically strengthening and advancing the goals of the residential colleges and serve on university committees to represent the residential college program;

  • Represent, as necessary, the interests of the college in negotiations and conversations with campus partners, including the Offices of Capital Projects, Advancement, Housing, Campus Dining, and Facilities.
