Dec. 3, 2024 TO: All FacultyFROM: Michael Gordin, Dean of the College Gene Jarrett, Dean of the Faculty Rod Priestley, Dean of the Graduate SchoolRE: Holding Classes during Weather EventsAs we move into the winter months and the possibility of disruptive weather, we write with guidance regarding the conditions under which it would be appropriate to hold or cancel your classes. In the event of a severe storm, the campus might be considered unsafe for walking, in which case the University will cancel all classes. Under less severe conditions, including even those that disrupt normal University operations, you may hold classes at your discretion. You should do so, however, only if you feel that you and your students can safely make the trip to campus. In the case of graduate courses, please keep in mind that many graduate students do not live on campus. Please also consult with your preceptors as they decide whether or not they can hold their sessions. If you decide to cancel your class, you should notify your students through Canvas as early as possible. We strongly encourage you to schedule a make-up class later in the semester.Remember, too, that many colleagues who assist us in teaching courses and preparing instructional materials (for instance, SCADs, media services staff, and other departmental staff) are generally considered “non-essential” employees. They most likely will not be on campus in weather conditions that disrupt normal University operations. The same holds for graduate students who assist with teaching courses. Individuals who experience mobility challenges — of course including undergraduate and graduate students — may have extra difficulty getting to class safely and on time. Please consult the FAQ on the Emergency Management site for further guidance. During a weather event, you should check the Inside Princeton homepage for updates. Related documents Holding Classes during Weather Events DEC 2024
