From managing the academic calendar to advising on policies related to admission and financial aid, our committees reflect and enhance the University mission. The Dean of the College chairs the following committees, which oversee essential aspects of the undergraduate academic experience. Council of College Heads Chair: Michael GordinSecretary: Anne Caswell Contact: Bhuvan Shori Purpose The Council of College Heads is concerned with creating and maintaining an environment in the undergraduate residential colleges which supports and enhances the educational mission of the University. In carrying out these responsibilities, the Council of College Heads, after consulting with the college and hall councils, sets policy for the residential and dining facilities for which it has general oversight and may advise the dean of undergraduate students, the dean of the college, and the president on matters of general concern. The council works in conjunction with, and makes recommendations to, regular standing committees of the Faculty, especially the Committee on the Course of Study and the Committee on Undergraduate Life. Faculty Committee on Classrooms and Schedule Chair: Michael GordinSecretary: Katherine A. StantonContact: Kristine Gindele Purpose The Committee on Classrooms and Schedule is authorized by the faculty to arrange the Academic Calendar in accordance with the rules and procedures of the faculty. The committee assesses classroom and teaching laboratory space and recommends physical and technological improvements that meet the evolving pedagogical needs of the University. After consultation with the dean of the college and with representatives of the various departments concerned, the committee arranges hours for undergraduate class exercises and examinations. Faculty Committee on Examinations and Standing Chair: Michael GordinSecretary: Anne CaswellContact: Bhuvan Shori Purpose On behalf of the faculty, the Committee on Examinations and Standing administers academic regulations concerning the program of study and scholastic standing of undergraduate students. It may present proposals for changes in these regulations to the Committee on the Course of Study. In keeping with these regulations, the committee determines whether or not a student has met the qualifications for admission to particular programs of study, for promotion to a higher class, and for graduation. It is authorized by the faculty to recommend directly to the Board of Trustees, through the dean of the college, candidates for the bachelors’ degree. Acting for the faculty, it determines whether students who are academically deficient shall be required to withdraw from the University and whether students who have withdrawn because of academic deficiency shall be reinstated. It is also responsible for the formulation and administration of policies in regard to student records. The committee nominates to the faculty, during the spring term each year, a candidate for the post of Latin Salutatorian and a candidate for the post of Valedictorian, under the rules set forth in the Undergraduate Announcement with respect to the selection of commencement speakers. Requests made under the provisions of the University’s academic regulations, as well as petitions for exceptions to them, should first be discussed with a student’s residential college dean or assistant dean. The final request or petition should be delivered in writing to the secretary of the committee for presentation to the committee. Students do not appear in person before the committee. Faculty Committee on the Course of Study Chair: Michael GordinSecretary: Rebekah PeeplesContact: Rebekah Peeples Purpose The Committee on the Course of Study considers and recommends to the faculty appropriate action on all matters connected with the educational policy of the undergraduate program. These include: requirements for admission to the University; requirements for all bachelors' degrees; methods of instruction, programs of study, and regulations concerning scholastic standing; the institution of new courses and the modification of existing courses in the undergraduate curriculum; and the promotion, monitoring, and publicizing of experiments in teaching.All proposals to add courses to the permanent curriculum, delete courses from the permanent curriculum, or make substantive changes to existing courses or departmental programs of study are reviewed by the committee. Proposals which receive positive committee recommendations are presented to the full faculty for a vote at the monthly meetings of the faculty. Faculty Committee on Undergraduate Admission and Financial Aid Chair: Michael GordinSecretary: Elizabeth BadgerContact: Kristine Gindele Purpose The Committee on Undergraduate Admission and Financial Aid advises the president, the dean of the college, the dean of admission, and the director of undergraduate financial aid on policies and procedures governing admission and financial aid. The committee is advised by the Committee on the Course of Study as to basic academic requirements for admission of undergraduates. It may in turn present to the Committee on the Course of Study proposals for changes in these basic requirements, and it may concern itself with additional criteria necessary for the final selection of candidates for admission. On the recommendation of the dean of admission, the committee grants regular undergraduate admission to the University subject to limitations of enrollment. On the recommendation of the director of the undergraduate financial aid office, the committee awards all undergraduate scholarships and supervises all forms of financial aid to undergraduate students subject to the limitation of available funds.
